This book tells and shows you how to make
oshigata (押形), which is a very useful skill for a collector of
Nihonto. Making
oshigata forces you to notice things you otherwise wouldn’t; it’s also a great learning experience.
Oshigatas are made in order to reproduce the engraved smith's signature on the
nakago (sword rod), the hardening line as well as further characteristics on the surface of a sword. A well done oshigata facilitates afterwards an exact classification of the blade.
