The scene shows one of the most famous incidents of mounted archery (
yabusame). During the
Gempei war (1180-1185), the
Heike withdrew to their boat and the persecuting
Genji were stopped from the sea. They mounted a fan on one of their ship's mast and requested their pursuers to shoot it down.
Nasu no Yoichi accepted the challenge, rode to the sea and hit the fan with the first shot.
This illustration, however, shows that the shot was fired from the shore and is a lithographic print according to a template of
Hiroshige.
