Samurai watches a sword fighting training | ||
This picture shows a samurai travelling (musha shugyô) who looks interested at the sword fight training between teacher and student in a dôjô. Beautiful and rare print! Kuchi-e are woodblock prints which were printed especially into the front of (that is the mouth) of Japanese novels and literary magazines. Produced around the turn of the century (1868-1912). The word Kuchi-e translates literally "mouth pictures". One can also regard them as precursor of the later mangas. Artist: Unknown. Format: approx. 25 x 21 cm. Year of publication: around 1880 Condition: Clean sheet. A dark spot at the upper edge. Corners slightly rubbed. Overall darkened. Colours: Strong and very good. Kuchi-e are original woodblock prints who were manually produced in the tradition of the old Ukiyo-e. This image may slightly vary in colour to the original - due to the photo/scan. |
